General Store, Café & Tourism All-Rounder
The French Island General Store is looking for a friendly, reliable all-rounder to join our team for the summer season, starting mid-to-late October through to March, on a casual basis with ongoing potential.
This varied role spans our general store, café, tourism services, accommodation and customer service. It would suit someone practical, flexible and happy to work across different areas of the business.
French Island is an off-grid eco-tourism destination, with visitors coming to hike, cycle and spot koalas. The store is the central hub of the island, where visitors stop for lunch or coffee, hire an e-bike, gather local information and maps, or stay in one of our three accommodations.
Duties include:
- café service and food preparation
- taking orders and counter sales, including cash handling
- answering the phone
- cooking across the grill and deep fryer
- making sandwiches, salads and menu items
- coffee machine, beverages and milkshakes
- table service and clearing
- stocking shelves and displaying products
- helping with e-bike hire enquiries
- accommodation check-ins, cleaning and turnovers
- general cleaning and daily shop duties
We’re looking for someone who is reliable, honest, diligent, friendly with customers and able to work well in a fast-paced commercial kitchen, hospitality and retail environment. Experience in hospitality, retail, tourism or cafés would be highly regarded.
You will need:
- good cooking and food preparation skills
- strong customer service skills
- RSA certification
- Food handling certification
- current driver’s licence
- weekend availability, plus flexibility for some weekdays
- the right to work in Australia, including a working visa if applicable
Getting here:
French Island is accessible only by ferry (from Cowes on Phillip Island or Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsula) or barge — approximately one hour from Melbourne. Mainland applicants must be able to travel reliably for rostered shifts. There are multiple ferries per day and rosters can be arranged to line up with ferry times. The Stony Point train generally connects with the ferry, parking is available at departure points, and we can arrange pick-up from the ferry for weekend shifts.
Hours available (aligned with ferry arrival times):
- Saturdays 10:00am – 3:00pm
- Sundays 10:00am – 3:00pm
- Some weekdays, approx. 11:00am – 2:00pm
